How Study Score Calculator Work
Study scores are calculated based on your performance of you against other students in the respective subject. They are set to mean 30, and standard deviation of 7. This means:
- 30 is an average study score
- 40+ is an excellent study score (top 9% of the state)
- 45+ is an outstanding study score (top 2% of the state)
- 50 is the highest possible study score (top 0.3% of the state)
Understanding Study Scores
The scores in the study are a statistical rating of your performance in the subject against the whole population of students who have taken the subject in Victoria. They show the relative performance as compared to that of the state cohort.
Your raw (SACs and exams) scores are summed and statistical moderated to derive your study score. The process provides equity between the various schools and testing conditions.
Scaling for ATAR
Study scores are scaled by VTAC to calculate your ATAR. Scaling adjusts for:
- Subject difficulty
- Competition level in each subject
- Overall performance of students in each subject
Some subjects typically scale up (like Specialist Maths), while others may scale down. Your ATAR is calculated from your best four scaled study scores plus 10% of your fifth and sixth subjects.
State Systems
- VIC : VCE with study scores (0-50)
- NSW: HSC with marks and bands
- QLD: QCE with overall positions (OP) until 2020, now ATAR
- WA: WACE with ATAR calculation
- SA: SACE with ATAR
- TAS: TCE with ATAR
- ACT: AST with ATAR
- NT: NTCET with ATAR
Important Notes
This Study Score Calculator provides estimates only. Official statistical procedures identify actual study scores and ATAR, which cannot be accurately predicted. Final scores are affected by many factors such as:
- Precise performance distribution in the state.
- Modifications in scaling made by concerned authorities.
- Special school assessment moderation.
- Difficulty of exams and standards of marking.
