What is Mean Arterial Pressure?

Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) represents the mean pressure in the arteries of a patient in a single cardiac cycle. It is assumed to be a superior perfusion indicator to vital organs compared to systolic blood pressure.

MAP finds great significance within the clinical field to determine blood flow, tissue perfusion, and cardiovascular conditions. It is applied to inform treatment in hypertension, shock, and critical care.

MAP Formula

MAP = Diastolic BP + 1/3(Systolic BP - Diastolic BP)

or simply: MAP ≈ (2 × Diastolic + Systolic) ÷ 3

Clinical Significance

MAP values help healthcare providers assess cardiovascular health and organ perfusion:

  • 60-65 mmHg: Minimum for organ perfusion
  • 70-100 mmHg: Normal range for healthy adults
  • > 100 mmHg: May indicate hypertension
  • < 60 mmHg: May indicate shock or hypotension

Global Unit Conversion

This calculator supports both major blood pressure measurement units used worldwide:

  • mmHg (millimeters of mercury): Used in most countries including USA, UK, Europe
  • kPa (kilopascals): Used in some countries and scientific publications

Conversion Factor

1 mmHg = 0.133322 kPa
1 kPa = 7.50062 mmHg
